ANOTHER BLOCKBUSTER - UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN; THE TALE OF A UNIVERSITY WHERE INJUSTICE REIGN

UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN; THE TALE OF A UNIVERSITY WHERE INJUSTICE REIGNS

 When the word UNILORIN is mentioned to an "outsider' who probably haven't had any experience of the University, what would undoubtedly run through such person's mind is the general notion that the school is free of corruption. Free of corruption in the sense that lecturers aren't allowed to sell handouts to students, free of corruption in the sense that students are free from being molested by the lecturers before getting a pass mark, free of corruption in the sense that students are given the autonomy to buy what they felt is useful for them and ignore what they felt otherwise, and also free of corruption in the sense that students are not mandated to pay for the school fault.

  But are these assumptions true, are these assumptions what actually happens in reality... Are students not being molested by the lecturers? The case of Dr. Idiagbon, which went viral a year ago, would evidently answer this. Even with that, the girl is now facing the Student Disciplinary Committe (SDC), a reward for exposing corruption in the University system. The best reward the University of Ilorin could ever bestowed on an innocent whistle blower!

  Recently, the University of Ilorin management made 'GSE202', a compulsory course for her students in their second year, mid-way to the end of the semester. A lot of student had to print a new course form and go through to the strenuous process of printing and signing a new course form, and those whose  Course unit had exceeded the maximum Unit were advised to either drop an elective course or request for extra unit, a process which would cost the students to lose a sum of #1,050 to the school pocket, even though the fault is from them. It seems to be a smart way to illegally extorting money from the students. Yet, they parade themselves to be corrupt-free.

  As if that was not enough, students were mandated to buy the course textbook at a rate of #800 and a deadly threat was given that any student who fails to comply by paying for the book would not be allowed to sit for the course test and exam, a protocol which goes against the regulation of the school, For the purpose of those who doesn't have access to the University handbook, According to section 16 of the Students' information and regulation handbook, it states: "All students who are duly registered for courses in a given semester are eligible to sit for examinations in those courses except students in the following categories:
(A) A student who absents himself/herself from the University for upward of six weeks in any semester without official permission shall be deemed to have withdrawn from the university;
(B) A student who failed to attend up to 75% practical/lectures hours;
(C) In MB;BS programme,, a student who has no progressive assesment (PA) score or fails to complete the relevant clinical posting is ineligible for the University examinations.
This section of the handbook clearly stated that all students, who have registered for a course, have every rights to sit for such course examination, except some listed conditions which of course does not include non-payment of textbook charges. So why would the University Management impose textbooks on students and yet goes outside to parade itself as corrupt free with discipline? This does not only proves the University to be corrupt but also portray that the University has engrossed itself in immoralities which she preaches not, and punish her students for.

  There is little the Students' Union under the leadership of Com. Lukman Shobowale can do on this as they have been turned to puppets whose remote control is being operated from the Student Affairs Building.

  At this junction, we will like to drop our pen, for another good day, but not until we call the attention of the Acting  president of the federation, the Senate President, the minister for Education, The Nigeria University Commission (NUC), The Acting president of the federation, the Senate President, the minister for Education, The Nigeria University Commission (NUC), The Acting Chairman, EFCC, and other relevant stakeholders to extend the long arm of the anti-graft war to the University of Ilorin as the University kept getting worst in corruption everyday.
